✅ कारगिल युद्ध (वर्ष 1999) में देश के लिये सर्वोच्च बलिदान देने वाले भारतीय सैनिकों के शौर्य, पराक्रम व बहादुरी के सम्मान में श्रद्धांजलि अर्पित करने हेतु प्रत्येक वर्ष 26 जुलाई को कारगिल विजय दिवस मनाया जाता है।

✅ वर्ष 1999 के शुरुआती महीनों में भारतीय इलाके की नियंत्रण सीमा रेखा के कई ठिकानों, जैसे- द्रास, मारकोह, काकसर और यतालिक पर अपने आप को मुजाहिद्दीन बताने वालों ने कब्जा कर लिया था। 

✅ 1998-1999 की सर्दियों के दौरान पाकिस्तानी सशस्त्र बलों ने कारगिल, लद्दाख के द्रास और बटालिक सेक्टर में एनएच 1A पर स्थित किलेबंद ठिकानों पर कब्जा करने के लिए नियंत्रण रेखा (LoC) के पार गुप्त रूप से सैनिकों को प्रशिक्षित और तैनात किया।

✅ भारतीय सैनिकों ने पहले तो इन्हें घुसपैठियों को आतंकवादी या 'जिहादी' समझा, लेकिन जल्द ही यह स्पष्ट हो गया कि यह हमला एक सुनियोजित सैन्य अभियान था। 

✅ यह युद्ध वर्ष 1999 की गर्मियों में कारगिल सेक्टर में मश्कोह घाटी से लेकर तुरतुक तक फैली 170 किलोमीटर लंबी पर्वतीय सीमा पर लड़ा गया था। भारतीय सेना ने  ‘ऑपरेशन विजय’ की शुरुआत करके इसका जवाब दिया।

✅ वर्ष 2000 में द्रास में कारगिल युद्ध स्मारक की स्थापना भारतीय सेना द्वारा वर्ष 1999 में ऑपरेशन विजय की सफलता की याद में बनाया गया था।

✅ बाद में वर्ष 2014 में इसका जीर्णोद्धार किया गया। जम्मू और कश्मीर के कारगिल ज़िले के द्रास शहर में स्थित होने के कारण इसे "द्रास युद्ध स्मारक" के रूप में भी जाना जाता है।

✅ Kargil Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on 26 July to pay tribute to the bravery, valor and bravery of the Indian soldiers who made supreme sacrifice for the country in the Kargil War (year 1999).

✅ In the early months of the year 1999, many bases along the Line of Control of Indian Territory, such as Dras, Markoh, Kaksar and Yatalik, were occupied by those calling themselves Mujahideen. 

✅ During the winter of 1998-1999 the Pakistani Armed Forces secretly trained and deployed troops across the Line of Control (LoC) to capture fortified positions located on NH 1 A in the Dras and Batalik sectors of Kargil, Ladakh.

✅ Indian soldiers initially considered the infiltrators to be terrorists or 'jihadis', but it soon became clear that the attack was a well-planned military operation. 

✅ This war was fought in the summer of the year 1999 in the Kargil sector along a 170-kilometre-long mountain border stretching from the Mashkoh valley to Turtuk. Indian Army responded to this by launching ‘Operation Vijay’.

✅ The Kargil War Memorial established in Dras in the year 2000 was built by the Indian Army to commemorate the success of Operation Vijay in the year 1999.

✅ Later in the year 2014 it was restored. It is also known as the "Dras War Memorial" due to its location in Dras city of Kargil district of Jammu and Kashmir.
